   Another name for James was FRAZER, James.

  General Notes:

James Frazer, one of 192 convicts transported on the Albion, 21 September 1826. He was convicted at Middlesex Gaol. He was sentenced to Life. He travelled aboard the ship,Albion, departing 21st September, 1826, arriving 21st May, 1827 at New South Wales.

In the 1827 Convict Indent for James Frazer we read the following: that James Frazer was 19 years old, that he could read and write, he was single and of the Protestant religion, he was a shoemaker by trade. London is named as his native place. His offence is categorised as 'privately stealing'. He was tried and sentenced in London on 6 April 1826 and was given a life sentence. he had no family connections. his height is noted as 5 feet 2 inches, he was freckled, with brown hair and blue eyes. A later handwritten note adds 'Bird, heart and darts of E F on right arm upper part'. Separately a note added beneath earlier entry reads 'Escaped from the colony, was apprehended in London, returned by the Ship Fairlie in feb 1834'.

In the New South Wales, Australia, Gaol Description and Entrance Books for Sydney Gaol 1831 the record for James Frazer describes him as born in 1806, five feet three and a half inches in height, of slender build and fair complexion. His hair was brown and his eyes blue.

In the list of convicts arriving in 1833-1834, the name of James Frazer is included. (See note above re escape.) It notes only that he came aboard the vessel Fairlie and was serving a life sentence. In the column headed 'How disposed of' it records ominously 'To work in Irons Goat Isl'.


James married Ann QUIGLEY, daughter of Peter QUIGLY and Mary O'HARA, 19 February 1831(permission granted) in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. (Ann QUIGLEY was born in 1813 and died in 1865 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.)


  Marriage Notes:

On 19 February 1831 Ann Quigley and James Fraser were granted permission to marry. The clergyman who married them was John McGarvie of Sydney. Ann was 18 years of age and had come free to Sydney. James Fraser was 23 years old and serving a life sentence as a convict in Australia. He had come to Australia aboard the vessel Albion.
